There are many organizations advertising “international,” “national,” or “prestigious” art competitions. A big title does not automatically make a competition meaningful.

Hongyun focuses on credible, established competitions with genuine educational or recognition value. We generally avoid competitions that appear designed primarily to collect entry fees or sell awards, certificates, publications, or other products to families.

Our goal is not to collect as many certificates as possible. We want achievements that actually mean something.

Most of the competitions we select do not require an entry fee.

We prefer credible competitions where students do not have to pay simply for the opportunity to participate. However, occasionally a worthwhile and established competition may require an official entry fee.

When payment is required, Hongyun will notify the parents and send a payment request. Parents simply need to pay attention to our notifications and complete the payment before the deadline.

Hongyun Art students have received numerous awards and recognitions through art competitions over the years. Some students have received significant awards, including competitions with prizes of $500, $3,000, and other substantial recognition.

Historically, we have not done a good enough job publicizing these achievements. That is something we are improving.

The important point is that our competition program is not theoretical. Our students participate, compete, and win.

Because the value of competition extends far beyond art.

Preparing for a meaningful competition teaches students to work toward a real deadline, set a higher personal standard, push beyond their comfort zone, accept feedback and revise, develop patience and persistence, finish what they start, present their ideas publicly, and experience both winning and disappointment.

Winning is valuable. Learning how to compete is even more valuable. These are skills students can carry into academics, college, careers, and life.

Yes. This is one of the reasons we encourage competition.

A talented student may enjoy art but have little reason to push beyond the level that already feels comfortable. A competition changes the question from “Is this good enough for class?” to “How good can I make this?”

A real deadline and outside challenge can provide motivation that is sometimes difficult for either parents or teachers to create artificially.

Yes, meaningful recognition can strengthen a student's overall profile.

A credible regional, national, or highly competitive award can demonstrate initiative, commitment, achievement, creativity, and depth of interest. However, parents should not treat competitions as a formula for college admission.

A large collection of weak certificates is not necessarily impressive. Quality matters more than quantity. Our philosophy is to pursue meaningful opportunities rather than simply accumulating awards.

For competition projects that are part of our regular curriculum, yes

This is one of the major advantages of Hongyun Art's competition approach. When we identify an appropriate competition, we may incorporate the competition theme or requirements into a regular class project.

Students can develop their ideas with their teacher, create the artwork during class, receive technical and creative guidance, revise and strengthen their work, complete the final artwork, and have Hongyun Art to help prepare and submit the entry.

This means families do not necessarily need to find a separate competition coach or manage the entire process themselves.

If students have other competition projects they want to work on that are not part of our curriculum, we recommend they sign up for the Competition Team (see below) so they can work on their project with the help of one of our teachers. Students need to bring in the competition rules, requirements, entry deadlines as well as a draft of their work to come work at the studio.

No—and a credible competition should never guarantee an award.

Real competitions have real competition. Judging is also subjective. Excellent artwork may not win, while another piece may connect more strongly with that year's judges.

We teach students that there are two kinds of victories: external victory—receiving an award or recognition; and internal victory—producing stronger work than the student believed they were capable of producing. We want students to pursue both.

Yes. Hongyun Art helps students submit their competition artwork for our class projects as long as parents submit necessary info and payments (if required) on time.

Our goal is to make participation as easy as possible for students and families. When Hongyun Art organizes a competition opportunity, we will help prepare and submit the student's artwork according to the competition requirements.

If a competition requires an entry fee or payment from the family, Hongyun Art will send a request or notification to the parents.

Parents need to pay attention to Hongyun app notifications, emails, and school announcements; respond promptly if we request an entry fee or additional information; and complete payment before the competition deadline when a fee is required.

Please do not ignore a competition payment or information request. Outside competitions have strict deadlines. If we do not receive the required payment or information in time, we may not be able to submit your child's artwork.

Hongyun will handle the submission process. Parents simply need to watch for our requests and respond before the deadline.

Hongyun Art will announce competition opportunities through our communication channels, including the Hongyun Art app, email, parent communications, school handouts and signs, front desk announcements, and teacher recommendations.

We strongly encourage parents to check the Hongyun Art app and our social media accounts regularly . Competition deadlines are controlled by outside organizations. Once a deadline passes, Hongyun Art usually cannot extend it.

Please contact the front desk as soon as possible.

If the competition deadline has not passed, we will do our best to help. However, outside organizations often have strict submission deadlines. Once registration or submission has closed, Hongyun Art cannot guarantee that a late entry will be accepted.

This is why it is important for parents to pay attention to school announcements and requests rather than waiting until they hear about the competition from another parent.

Different competitions have different age requirements, grade requirements, themes, media requirements, submission rules, deadlines, and skill expectations.

Teachers may recommend particular competitions when an opportunity is especially appropriate for a student's age, interests, or abilities.

Our objective is the right opportunity for the right student—not entering every student into every competition.

We also encourage parents to discuss competition positively with their children. Instead of “You need to win an award,” try: “Let's challenge yourself and see how far you can take your idea.”

Competition should create ambition and confidence—not fear.
